Swim Testing
The safety of children in and around the OakLeaf pools is a primary
concern of the YMCA, who manages the aquatics facilities and
programs. To better ensure the safety of the youth at OakLeaf,
the YMCA is swim testing all children under the age of 15,
to evaluate their swimming proficiency and to determine their
individual safety needs. Swim testing is offered during regular
pool hours. No appointment is necessary. Following is an explanation
of the YMCA’s policies
regarding swim testing. If you have any questions regarding swim
testing, please call Don at 291-1776 x 1.
- All youth under the
age of 15 must be swim tested and wear their Safe-T-Band at
the pool.
- The “Green Band” deep water test will consist
of the following:
• Jumping into the water that is over the individual’s
head and returning to the surface.
• Swimming one length of the pool unassisted and without rest.
• Treading water for at least one (1) minute.
• Swimming to a ladder and exiting the pool.
- If a swimmer cannot complete
all of the objectives listed above, they may take the “Yellow
Band” shallow
water competency test.
• Swimmer will be placed in a horizontal position on their
back by the testing guard.
• Swimmer must then stand up or regain a vertical position.
• Swimmer will be placed in a horizontal position on their
front by the testing guard.
• Swimmer must then stand up or regain a vertical position.
Swimmers passing the shallow water competency test are safe
to play in water that is armpit deep or less.
- Those who do not pass
the shallow water competency test are considered “Red
Band” or “non-swimmers.” Those who decline
to take the test are also considered “non-swimmers.” Non-swimmers
may not use the deep end of the pool at any time. Non-swimmers
require ACTIVE adult supervision. Active supervision means that
the parent/guardian must be in the water and within arms reach
at ALL times. (1 adult per 2 child ratio). Non-swimmers five
years of age or older may wear a Coast Guard approved PFD.
- At no time may a child with a red band or yellow band swim in
the deep end of the pool.
- All children will receive a colored sticker corresponding with
their swim level, on their membership card. Your card can be
exchanged at the check in area for the appropriate Safe-T-Band.
Safe-T-Bands should be returned to the check in area at the conclusion
of swimming.
- Intentionally wearing the wrong Safe-T-Band will result in immediate
removal from the pool.
- Lost Safe-T-Band will cost $2.00.
